AutoGuide reports that the coming Ford Focus ST will run with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower. This is a novel assertion for several reasons, the first being that it mimics a similarly unsourced rumor from one year ago in Autocar, down to the cylinder count and horsepower. Auto Guide leaves out the particulars about how Ford would coax more than 180 hp-per-liter from the L Dragon engine; Autocar’s 2017 article said the Blue Oval would rely on twin-scroll t
After revealing the grille of the 2019 Lexus ES last week, Lexus posted a single photo of the whole shebang this morning. Only two sentences accompanied the image: “The all-new ES springs from a reimagined luxury equation. Engaging design, athletic performance, and renowned refinement transform Lexus’s most popular sedan.” We could be forced to wait until the Beijing reveal on April 25 for substantial info on that transformation, but based on what we already suspect, the coming ES has big britch
After four years of rumors about a Lexus LS powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, the chief engineer of the flagship sedan says the carmaker’s working on even more options. Toshio Asahi told Australia’s GoAuto that three alternative powertrains — plug-in hybrid, full electric, and hydrogen — are “all on the table” for consideration. Asahi wouldn’t give any timeframes, but whenever they arrive, additional drive options would fill out the LS range to better contend with the Germans.
The Audi RWS (Rear Wheel Series) bundles two large surprises in its compact aluminum frame. The first surprise is that it exists at all, this being the first rear-wheel drive production Audi since the 1938 Audi 920 – long before Audi was the carmaker we now know. The second surprise is the price, the R8 RWS needing just $139,950 to take home, a figure that includes destination. Stripping Quatto, complexity, and weight means stripping $26,200 from the price of the standard R8, while retaining eve
Speed cameras have dipped below the surface of the news cycle, yet the programs often remain a nuisance. New Orleans resident Donald Schultz provides the latest example of municipal malfeasance: A speed camera has issued at least ten speeding citations since 2011 to the Nissan Frontier that Schultz parks in front of his house. A car doing more than the posted 35-mph limit triggers the camera, located in the median of Canal Boulevard, but the camera reads the stationary Frontier’s license plate i
It emerged last December that McLaren had built an all-electric testbed for a future EV supercar, to go along with the English automaker’s $1.4 billion investment in electrified powertrains. At the time, all the company would say was there was “still quite a journey” to making a sellable product due to battery constraints. Speaking to Wheels magazine, Jens Ludmann, COO at McLaren Automotive, put numbers to the carmaker’s quest, saying, “[The] Senna has 800 PS on 1200kg, that’s about the power to
Autobild put together a slideshow forecasting various convertibles due to arrive from 2018 to 2023. The long-prophesied Acura NSX Roadster graced the first slide, reportedly prepped for market launch later this year at a price of 200,000 euros. That’s about 13,000 euros more spendy than the hardtop, a relative bargain. Don’t call your Goldman private banker yet, though — that Autobild slide is likely as close as any of us will get to said roadster this year.
Ford is ready to talk a little more about the 2019 Edge ST, starting with how the muscled-up crossover will make best use of its extra power. We know there will be 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque coming from the 2.7-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, meaning 20 hp and 30 lb-ft more than the 2018 Edge Sport AWD with the same engine. The Edge ST becomes the first application of Ford’s eight-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, providing two more gears to put the power down through stan
The next decade in cars will revolutionize the landscape, as iconic holdouts switch to electrification. When Australian outlet Car Advice asked Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Möers about the future of the brand’s high-performance cars, Moërs revealed, “[The] next-generation Mercedes-AMG C 63 will be a hybrid — that’s now a given.” What’s more, AMG might have the AMG C 63’s successor send its power to all four wheels.
It’s called the “subscription economy,” and BMW is about to join it. Bloomberg reports that the luxury automaker will launch its Access by BMW subscription service April 2 at a dealership in Nashville, Tennessee. BMW’s U.S. boss said the brand was looking at launching such an initiative sometime this year, but wouldn’t divulge details on precise timing or location.
