Ford Focus ST to come with a 275-hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder?

Filed under:

AutoGuide reports that the coming Ford Focus ST will run with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower. This is a novel assertion for several reasons, the first being that it mimics a similarly unsourced rumor from one year ago in Autocar, down to the cylinder count and horsepower. Auto Guide leaves out the particulars about how Ford would coax more than 180 hp-per-liter from the L Dragon engine; Autocar’s 2017 article said the Blue Oval would rely on twin-scroll t

Ford Focus ST prototype spied at the Nurburgring

Filed under:

The reveal of the new, more elegant-looking Ford Focus has us excited, but the Focuses we’re really waiting for are the high-performance ones, the ST and the RS. Based on these spy shots, it looks like we probably don’t have long to wait for the former. They seem to show an ST in very minimal camouflage lapping the Nurburgring.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8 spied for the first time

Filed under:
,,,,

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a favorite among the Autoblog staff. Until recently, one among us owned a fifth-generation model. The current Mk7 is a great car, but it’s getting along in years. It’s been on sale for four years in the US and six years in Europe. Development on the eighth-generation is underway, and spy photographers caught an early test mule having a bit of trouble on the road.

Filed under:

Despite sales of the Lexus CT hybrid hatchback ending last year in the U.S., Lexus isn’t planning to abandon its segment in favor of the new compact crossover, the UX. The CT remains on sale in some countries, and Lexus’s European boss is adamant the brand has to keep offering cars in that segment.

Economy-car buyers increasingly get the best deal on technology

Filed under:
,,,,,,,,,,

One of the great things about technology is – with the exception of Apple products – consumers get more for their money every year. For example, the first 1GB USB drive I bought in 2005 cost me $30. Today you can get 10 for that price, delivered to your door thanks to Amazon. The same goes for car tech.

Sunday Drive: One of these things is not like the others

One of these things is not like the others. And we don’t mean that one is a Chevy while the rest are all from Ford. No, what we’re looking at here are a bunch of performance cars, with one lone economy car thrown in for good measure.

BMW i1 EV rumored, based on electric Mini

Filed under:
,,,,,,

With just two BMW i cars currently available — and aging — we’ve been hankering to know what new EVs are coming down the pipeline for the Bavarian automaker. We’ve had news of the iNext and i4, caught wind of an iX3, and as BMW is in the early stages of a large electrification push, there has been a multitude of “i”-prefaced trademarks registered. The next we can expect, if the rumors from Spanish outlet Motor.es are to be believed, will be a diminutive i1 EV, based on the same platf

As the industry continues to build out electric vehicle charging infrastructure, parallel projects are working to improve it as quickly as it’s deployed. Now we’re seeing some groups launching fast charging stations capable of 350-kW, and more. Meanwhile, wireless charging is making advances, which would allow drivers to simply park and charge without fussing with a cable. Kia is the latest to test inductive charging, and has announced that it has deployed a fleet of Soul EVs capable of rechargi
