Lexus exploring PHEV, full EV and fuel cell versions of LS flagship

After four years of rumors about a Lexus LS powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, the chief engineer of the flagship sedan says the carmaker’s working on even more options. Toshio Asahi told Australia’s GoAuto that three alternative powertrains — plug-in hybrid, full electric, and hydrogen — are “all on the table” for consideration. Asahi wouldn’t give any timeframes, but whenever they arrive, additional drive options would fill out the LS range to better contend with the Germans.

Good news for Californians interested in leasing the Honda Clarity’s fuel cell version: Honda has announced the cars have started arriving at select Honda dealerships today. The Clarity Fuel Cell will be available from 12 Honda dealers in California, namely six around the Los Angeles/Orange County areas, five in the SF Bay Area and one in Sacramento.

A little while ago we wrote about ItalDesign’s Zerouno supercar, which is sold under the company’s own brand name. Another design house, Pininfarina, will also become a carmaker brand, as it prepares to launch a hypercar with Mahindra investments backing it up.

When we travelled to South Korea to test out the new Hyundai Santa Fe, we also got a chance behind the wheel of the new hydrogen-powered Nexo fuel-cell SUV. Hyundai unveiled the Nexo at CES in January as a replacement for the Tucson Fuel Cell, which logged miles and gathered data in 18 countries over the course of its generation. The Nexo is an improvement: It’s more efficient, packed with smarter driver assistance technologies and, in our opinion, is more attractive.
